Strange Magic

Let’s kick off the first day of Summer, with some covers songs from a movie based on William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Plenty of cover songs in this jukebox musical so let’s jump right in with Alan Cumming’s character the Bog King singing ‘Mistreated’. Originally by Deep Purple

‘Wild Thing’ Written by Chip Taylor, sung in the movie by the leads; Evan Rachel Wood and Alan Cumming, but first, ‘Tell Him’, popularized by the Exciters, performed in the movie by Meredith Bull & Maya Rudolph.

‘Say Hey (I Love You)’ performed by Elijah Kelley, Originally by by Michael Franti & Spearhead

Up next we have Sam Palladio as as Roland singing ‘C’mon Marianne’ by The Four Seasons, followed by Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)’ sung by Evan Rachel Wood as Marianne. Then the two songs are mashed up a bit at the end.

Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)’ has a few version in the movie. Let’s listen to my favorite, the  Fairy Waltz Version

‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’ (Which is a bit of a cover itself, written by Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore and George David Weiss, and Sung by Elvis) has been covered a lot. Let’s hear Evan Rachel Wood & Sam Palladio’s cover.

Up nest is the Bob Marley classic ‘Three Little Birds’ performed by Elijah Kelley and Meredith Anne Bull

‘I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)’ by the Four Tops get covered by Meredith Bull.

‘I’ll Never Fall in Love Again’, another crooner classic by Burt Bacharach and Hal David is covered by Evan Rachel Wood in the film.

Let’s get back to the villain with Alan Cumming’s cover of  another Elvis tune; ‘Trouble’

There’s more songs in the film of course, but if you want to see them all, go watch the movie. Have a great summer everyone!
